From the book Deep Green Resistance:

I am reading the book Deep Green Resistance and this paragraph hit me hard. It really is so true that this is where we are heading as a “civilization”.

Read it and frankly, read the book.

It is primarily an urban phenomenon. Civilizations emerge from and promote the growth of cities. Cities offer a pool of workers who, crowded together and severed from land, must labor to survive. Urban areas are densely surveilled and policed. Urban areas are epicentres of strife when civilizations fall; as Lewis Mumford wrote, "Each historic civilization ... begins with a living urban core, the polis, and ends in a common graveyard of dust and bones, a Necropolis, or city of the dead: fire-scorched ruins, shattered buildings, empty workshops, heaps of meaningless refuse, the population massacred or driven into slavery."

 Stop buying shit

I know this will piss off people, but here goes anyway.

When your economy encourages people to consume unneeded things that they don't need or even want and to do more of it each year than the year before, just to keep the whole pyramid from collapsing; then, you need a different economy.

People are the problem. Greed is the problem.

As Jimmy Carter said:

"Human identity is no longer defined by what one does but rather by what one owns."

Rich fucks fuel the greed; they don't give a shit. They only care that their pockets become fuller on your dime. Many think that the green movement, environmentalism, and the end of oil and gas will make the world all shiny and new again. Wake the fuck up. It won't.

The takeover of environmentalism by billionaires is the problem. Look deeper into who's controlling many of these alternative energies; you will find many of the same people currently running big oil and gas. Look behind the facade of “green energy” and the destruction caused by the creation of green energy. The merger of capitalism and environmentalism is now complete.

The environmental movement may be the most hypocritical movement currently going. The only natural way to reduce environmental impact is first to stop buying shit. Shit, you don't need it.

We are told we must consume more. As we have seen during the pandemic, even the slightest drop in spending leads to widespread unemployment, bankruptcy and home foreclosures. It is local businesses that take the hit, yet the funny thing that happened on the way to the pandemic. The rich got richer.

What would happen to our economy, our ecology, our products, ourselves if we stopped buying so much shit? Is this an alternative world, one we might actually want to live in?

We consume far too much.  We consume resources five times faster than they can regenerate. And despite efforts to "green" our consumption by recycling, increasing energy efficiency, or using solar power, there is no decline in global carbon emissions.

Approaching this paradox head-on, we as consumers are oblivious to the hidden impacts of the goods and services we make and consume. We are victims of a blind spot about the destructive effects of producing, packaging, shipping, distributing, and discarding what we buy because it is no longer needed or it broke. ( Planned obsolescence).

We hear the word extremist a lot. I wonder if we aren't living in an extremist version of capitalism. “Economic growth” is all that really matters, and the earth just a commodity or machine that we own and operate, with no consideration to the true cost.

The problem is growth isn't perpetual.

Everyone says they want to live simpler. Yet, we continue to blindly adopt the "Koolaid-aid "of more and more technology. When really we need to put a stop to rampant technology adoption. To let things rest.

But that is not what we are programmed to do.

Solitude...

More than ever, one needs solitude.

Being alone allows us to regulate and adjust our lives. It teaches us the ability to satisfy our own needs.

Solitude can restore energy, the stillness of being alone provides us with much-needed rest. It brings forward our longing to explore, our curiosity about the unknown, our will to be an individual, our hopes for freedom.

Alone time is fuel for life.

I've got to get this off my chest...

I've said for years! Deforestation is not 'just' about trees; it's about the survival of every species of animals, including us.

Think about the fundamental thing we were taught in school about what trees do!

TREES CLEAN THE AIR.

FACT: Carbon dioxide (CO2) building up in our atmosphere, is the major contributor to climate change.

FACT: Trees absorb CO2, removing and storing the carbon while releasing oxygen back into the air. In just one year, one acre of mature trees can absorb enough CO2 produced when you drive your car 26,000 miles.

However, we continue to destroy our forests at an alarming rate; and blame other industries for climate change?

I consider myself an environmentalist. However, let’s be clear, I would say that I am a “pragmatic environmentalist.”

I believe there is far too much negative focus on the O&G industry, all the while other industries are going on completely unchallenged and destroying large, sensitive tracts of land.

Let’s talk about clearcutting. So many areas in our headwaters are being destroyed. However, there is nary a peep about the damage done. Why? Because there are companies (people) that profit from all the negative focus on the oil and gas industry, while the destruction of our forests continues unchallenged.

The Alberta governments proposal to build the Maclean and Springbank dry dams are incredibly bad ideas with potentially devastating results. The problem is not the river! It is the rapid drainage from destroying forests upstream!

All the same, Alberta Environment is allowing continued destruction to the watershed upstream! We should be correcting harm, not causing more of it.

So, let's be clear here; bringing the O&G industry in Alberta to its knees is not helpful on so many levels. The revenues that are received by all levels of government go a long way to pay for and support other industries here. YES.. including "green" industries.

( Ok, I will step off my soap-box now )

Democracy in the US is Over!

“Al Gore told The New Yorker’s Ryan Lizza, “The influence of special interests is now at an extremely unhealthy level. It’s at a point,” he said, “where it’s virtually impossible for participants in the current political system to enact any significant change without first seeking and gaining permission from the largest commercial interests who are most affected by the proposed change.”
― Jane Mayer, Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right

Those "special interests" have bought and paid for a "president" that will do as they demand. Democracy in the US is over folks! We MUST not let that happen in Canada. #truenorthstrongandfree #eattherich

A new study partly-sponsored by Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center has highlighted the prospect that global industrial civilisation could collapse in coming decades due to unsustainable resource exploitation and increasingly unequal wealth distribution.

tales of the bush punk

After my last post, a number of people asked me “who is this bushpunk” you speak of?”
Well, bushpunk is not his real name obviously. I have used a moniker that best suits him for all that he is and stands for.

bushpunk and I have been friends going on 47 years now. In these years, we have had multitudes of adventures together. These adventures have made me in a large part the man I am today.
Along our years, we have gone without seeing each other for extended periods of time. Yet when we do connect, we pick up right where we left off.

I am an only child, and bushpunk is the closest thing I have to a brother. bushpunk has been with me through virtually everything and knows what makes me tick.

We've hiked, fished, hunted, drove countless backcountry roads and had many road trips together.
Over the next while, I am going to share some of these stories with bushpunk here. I hope that you will enjoy them. If you do, will you please indicate on FaceBook or Twitter. I have tons of stores to tell and will happily keep on telling them if you enjoy.

Oh the tale this trail could tell..

there was a day... when I was young...
some things that made me who I am today...

As we would often do, bushpunk and I went hiking and camping in some fairly remote areas.
While staying at bushpunks grandparents in Balfour BC, we decided we would do a back county hike to Wheeler Lake.

Getting to this lake was no small feat. At this time, it was only accessible by a very rough logging road that required us to get out several times and clear the path so that his Grandfather could continue driving us.

Eventually, we came to a point that travel in the van was no longer an option and bushpunk and I set out on foot to hike the remaining 10 miles of trail to reach the lake. So off we set, packs on our backs and Samson his trusty dog leading the way for us on the trail that would eventually take us to the lake. The day was a beautiful, warm and sunny. Really a picture perfect day without a cloud in the sky.

After hiking a short distance, we came upon a dried creek bed that had about a 10 foot drop on our side of the trail. All along the bottom, the creek-bed was covered in Nettles. For those that do not know, Nettles have stinging hairs on them and are most unpleasant to have a run-in with. This posed an issue for us as we needed to reach the other side to continue along the way to Wheeler lake.

Looking up and down the creek-bed, we noticed a fallen tree crossing the creek and creating a perfect bridge for us. Up to this point, Samson was leading the way up the path, but he was unsure about balancing his way across this log. With that, bushpunk set off in the lead and made it successfully to the other side. Calling Samson to entice him to go next, but Samson would not have anything to do with crossing the log. At this point I decided I would make my way to the other side, believing that with both bushpunk and me over there, Samson would be more motivated to come over with us.

I begin to make my way across the log, feeling a little unsteady as it sure looked wider before I set foot on it. As I made may way across the log, my back and forth movements of keeping my balance, I sense my pack is not sitting as best as it should, but I continue along slowly.
Samson at this point decided he was not going to risk being left behind, and makes a run for the other side where bushpunk was. I am about midway across and about 10 feet off the ground and Samson is pushing at the back of my leg to get to bushpunk. My back pack shifts and I feel all my weight shift… and down I go…right onto the patch of Nettles.

Looking up, I see both bushpunk and Samson looking down at me with a bit of concern. Luckily for me, my pack and gear absorbed the fall…along with the nettles that were about 5 feet tall. Once I assessed that I was unscathed, I picked myself up and pondered how I would get out of the creek-bed, now that I was completely surrounded by these menacing Nettles….

The only way out was to hoof it through them to the other side and scramble up the steep embankment with the help of bushpunk from above. Once this little diversion was over, we continued on the trail to the lake.

We were nearing the lake when we caught the stench of rotting flesh coming through the trees. This can often be an indicator that bears are in the area and one should leave. Samson was growling steadily and looking into the woods. We increased our pace and made it though the final parts of the trail, making as much noise and we possibly could along the way.

With out much warning we literally popped out of the trees and onto a clearing that jutted out into the lake. Wheeler Lake is the stereotypical mountain lake. Completely surrounded by trees and steep terrain all around, giving a very closed in feeling except for the small opening to the south where the lake drained into a creek that eventually empties into the Kootenay Lake.

We took in the lake and then began the job of setting up our camp as night fall would be upon us quickly. With the shear mountain to the West, the sun would disappear very quickly.

Once we were set up, we took out fishing gear out went and dropped our lines into the lake hoping we would catch a fish for our supper. What a surprise we had. The first cast into the water each of us made, we both pulled out a small, but very suitable fish for each of our supper. We quickly cooked up the fish for supper, coated in butter and pepper over the open fire and it was probably the best meal we could have ever had.

As we knew we were deep in bear territory and most likely Grizzly, we did all the proper preparations for such a situation. Our packs and food were hung up in a big tree some distance away from our camp, or at least as far aways as we could with the density of the forest around us. We also carefully cleaned our cooking gear so not to attract any unwanted guests.

We spent the night, by the fire, Samson laying between us, the reflection of the fire in the lake, and the sky alive with stars. It was amazing!

Feeling tired, we decide to go to sleep as we had to head back down to the road tomorrow where bushpunk's grandfather was going to pick us up. We stoked up the fire before crawling into the tent with the thought that would discourage any bear from coming right into the campsite. No such luck.

After being asleep for a few hours, Samson began a very low growl waking both bushpunk and me up. At that point we could hear the heavy breathing of a bear coming from behind our tent. bushpunk covered Samson completely trying to keep him from growling and bringing attention to us in the tent. The bear continued to grunt and snort as it casually ambled around the campsite, occasionally bumping into a guy-wire for the tent. The foul smell of rotten flesh in the air around us. Both bushpunk and I clutched our knifes ready to do what ever had to be done if the bear decided to investigate the tent.

The bear casually strolled between the fire and our tent, their body blocking the light. Then continued to grunt and snort and made their way out of the campsite, seeming totally not giving a shit to us being there. That however was the end of us sleeping that night. We both laid there, ears straining to listen for any sound that came from the forest behind us.

Morning came slowly, but as the sun peeked over the mountain, we were greeted with a most spectacular sight. The lake had a light steam rising off of the surface and the water looked as if it was boiling with fish surfacing to catch the morning bugs on the water.

We made breakfast for ourselves and then began clean up of the campsite. Once done we began our journey back down the trail to the logging road that his Grandpa was going to meet us on. We knew we were going to be at the meeting spot early, but we were happy to sit there and not be as close to the bear that we now knew was in the area.

bushpunk's grandfather picked us up and drove us back to the house by Balfour , with the two of us sleeping in the back of his van, having another adventure under or belts.

…things you remember when looking at at map.

STOP Buying SHIT

what do we need with so much SHIT in our lives?

I was having a rant to myself this past weekend while listening to all the hype of “Black Friday” and now “cyber Monday”. People , frantically trying to buy some piece of crap ( insert clutter here) when they do not need more shit!!

As I watch this display of greed, I kept asking myself why people the need to always be putting some external item in their life that does not actually fulfill, but does the opposite and in the end leaves them feeling hollow.

Of course the only conclusion is that people are cramming SHIT into their lives to fill that empty space that our working culture has imposed on us.

The culture of the forty plus work weeks is big business’ most powerful tool for keeping people in this same dissatisfied state where the answer to every problem is to buy something. Instant gratification!

We must put a stop to this destructive cycle and stop buying useless shit that will only bring us down and in the end, find its way to our already overflowing garbage dumps.

STOP Buying SHIT….you don’t need it!!

What is Jumbo Wild?

The other day, I had someone ask me about the Jumbo Wild stickers I have on my Jeep. When I explained to them what Jumbo Wild was, I was frankly a little shocked that they had not heard about the region and the proposed development. But, ifyou have not experienced the region, it may not register.

In 1990, a group called Glacier Resorts Ltd presented to the BC government their plan of developing a year round resort. Jumbo Valley is at headwaters of Jumbo Creek in the Purcell Range of the Columbia Mountains, and it is simply magnificent to say the least.

The significance of this region is one that has long been revered for its spiritual significance and beauty to the Ktunaxa Nation. It is known as Qat’muk, home of the grizzly bear spirit. Biologists recognize the area as critical core grizzly bear habitat and is the largest remaining tract of uninterrupted wilderness and a significant Grizzly range.

The last thing that is needed is another “resort” in the area. There is already enough development in the Columbia Valley and enough failed attempts to develop the region.

The cost of development of the resort is far to great and the last thing needed is another development that puts even more pressure of a diminishing resource.

Please take the time to watch the movie on NetFlix. It will help so much in understanding the importance of this area.

HEY? Do you have the time?

How many days have gone by where you planned to get certain chores or tasks done but then at the end of that day you've realized that you accomplished absolutely nothing that you set out to do that day?

What's more important is that you have the realization that you’ve achieved nothing that you have set out to do for yourself. The goals, the dreams, the adventures that you keep tucked away in your head as a “someday”, “when I have time”, “I will do this….. But that day…never seems to come.

We are trapped in lives of busyness, and sooth ourselves through distractions, addictions or whatever. Leisure time is now the stuff of myth and taking time to think and dream about what you truly want to do in your life is frowned upon and viewed as selfish and self indulgent. “better get back to work on that “busy” list that you did nothin about today….”

Our time on Earth is uncertain and fleeting best! This is why it is vitally important for everyone, to take some deep breaths, think deep thoughts and smell some roses. Take the time to really take stock in what it is that you want to do with this life that you have and begin to create the life that you really want and deserve.

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

Waiting for someone or something to show you the way."

rebellion

Where all your rights become only an accumulated wrong; where men must beg with bated breath for leave to subsist in their own land, to think their own thoughts, to sing their own songs, to garner the fruits of their own labors...then surely it is a braver, a saner and truer thing, to be a rebel in act and deed against such circumstances as these than tamely to accept it as the natural lot of men.
